A report by the Head of Hockey, Gareth Terrett, reflecting on the 2019/2020 season

Head of Hockey report 2019/20

With the end of the season curtailed it was hard to celebrate the excellent achievements throughout the teams, but I am so pleased to be part of such a successful vibrant club.

Please find below a few of many highlights from the past year and some targeted areas moving forward:

Junior numbers continue to grow in many age groups but there are some target groups where we need to look at recruitment. We hope to have, Covid dependant, outreach programmes to local primary schools and set up a direct link with Gower college which we also hope will link with other secondary schools.

BUCS teams performed well across the board with both 1st XIs doing exceptionally well. The Girls finished 3rd in their league missing out on top spot by a single goal and only losing a single game all season. The boys finished 2nd and sadly lost in a tough national semi-final to Durham after a long trip up north. Overall the BUCS clubs topped the University BUCS points with the Men’s 1st XI being the highest performing team across the University. Target areas are promotion for both 2nd XIs to close the gap between 1sts and 2nds. Both 1st XI to push for playoffs.

Club outdoor. Very impressed that all nearly all teams had squads for matches rather than the bare number and the ability to adapt across situations. L4s unlikely to miss out on promotion. M1s promoted to Premier West after an unbeaten season scoring over 100 goals. L1s promoted to National League Premier after winning the Division 1 North League. The first Welsh team, men’s or women’s to play in the top league in the UK. Targets for next season. L2s to be promoted, L3s to retain league position. L4s to be promoted. M2s to be promoted. Everyone to have an enjoyable full season, Covid restrictions dependant.

Club indoor. M1s competed well in tough competition. L1s won the National competition. They won a bronze medal in the Euros in Porto. Targets: increase access and quality of training for all groups. Target European competitions both men’s and women’s

International representation. Across all age groups Swansea continue to produce a number of representatives to the National teams. A growing number of senior internationals now represent the Club at L1s. Target to continue to produce a pathway that allows for the highest possible performance. M1s league improvement to allow those aspiring to play senior international to remain at the club.

Many thanks for all your hard work and effort. I wish you every success for the coming season.

Gareth
